Treatment guide

A closer look at every treatment

Clear, honest answers on what each treatment involves, what to expect, and how we keep you comfortable throughout.

General Dentistry

General dentistry covers the regular check-ups and simple treatments that keep your teeth and gums healthy over the long term. It is the right starting point for anyone due for a check-up, noticing a small problem, or simply wanting peace of mind about their oral health.

What's involved

  • Routine dental examination, including a check of teeth, gums, bite and soft tissues
  • Scaling and polishing to remove plaque and tartar build-up
  • Tooth-coloured (composite) fillings for cavities
  • Oral hygiene advice tailored to your habits and needs
  • Dental X-rays when needed to check for hidden problems
  • Early detection and management of gum inflammation

What to expect

A check-up is usually quick and painless, and scaling may cause mild sensitivity afterwards that settles within a day or so. Your dentist will talk you through anything found and agree the next steps with you before doing further work.

Good to know: Most dentists recommend a check-up every six months, but some people benefit from more frequent visits — your dentist can advise what's right for you.

Cosmetic & Whitening

Cosmetic dentistry improves how your smile looks and feels, from brightening tooth colour to reshaping chipped or uneven teeth. It suits anyone who feels self-conscious about staining, gaps or minor imperfections and wants a natural-looking improvement.

What's involved

  • Professional teeth whitening using dentist-supervised methods
  • Porcelain veneers to reshape or brighten front teeth
  • Composite bonding to repair chips, gaps or discoloured areas
  • Shade matching so results look natural next to your other teeth
  • A consultation to discuss what's achievable and suits your smile
  • Aftercare guidance to help results last longer

What to expect

Whitening may cause temporary sensitivity to hot or cold, while veneers and bonding usually need one or two visits and involve little to no discomfort. Your dentist will explain the process step by step so there are no surprises.

Good to know: Whitening results vary from person to person and don't last forever — avoiding heavily staining foods and drinks (like coffee and tea) and not smoking help maintain the effect longer.

Crowns & Bridges

Crowns and bridges restore teeth that are broken, heavily worn or missing, helping you chew comfortably and smile with confidence again. This treatment suits patients with a cracked or weakened tooth, or a gap left by a missing tooth.

What's involved

  • Examination and X-rays to assess the tooth or gap
  • Preparing the affected tooth (or neighbouring teeth for a bridge)
  • Taking impressions or scans for a custom-made fit
  • Fitting a temporary crown or bridge while the permanent one is made
  • Bonding the final, custom-made crown or bridge in place
  • Bite check and adjustments for comfort

What to expect

The preparation visit is done under local anaesthetic so you shouldn't feel pain, though the area can feel sensitive for a day or two afterwards. You will usually need two visits spaced a couple of weeks apart, with a temporary restoration in between.

Good to know: With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, crowns and bridges can last many years, though they may eventually need replacing.

Family & Paediatric

Family and paediatric dentistry looks after smiles at every age, with a gentle approach designed especially for children — including those with special needs or autism. It helps kids build positive, low-anxiety associations with the dentist from an early age.

What's involved

  • Child-friendly check-ups to monitor the growth and development of teeth
  • Fluoride treatments to strengthen enamel and prevent decay
  • Fissure sealants to protect back teeth from cavities
  • Guidance on brushing, diet and habits like thumb-sucking
  • Extra time, patience and sensory-aware care for children with special needs or autism
  • Early identification of orthodontic or bite concerns

What to expect

Visits are paced to the child's comfort, with simple explanations and a calm environment, and appointments can be adjusted in length or approach for children who need extra support. Parents are welcome to stay close by throughout.

Good to know: Starting dental visits early, even before all the baby teeth arrive, helps children see the dentist as a normal, non-scary part of life.

Emergency Care

Emergency dental care deals with sudden pain or injury — a bad toothache, a broken or knocked-out tooth, swelling or a lost filling — that needs prompt attention. It is for anyone in discomfort who needs relief and answers quickly.

What's involved

  • Same-day assessment of pain, swelling or injury
  • Pain relief and treatment to stabilise the affected tooth
  • X-rays to check for underlying infection or damage
  • Temporary or definitive repair, depending on the problem
  • Guidance on managing a knocked-out tooth in the meantime
  • A follow-up plan once the immediate issue is resolved

What to expect

You will usually feel meaningful relief soon after treatment begins, and your dentist will explain whether further appointments are needed to fully resolve the issue. Try to be seen as soon as possible after an injury — quick action can make a real difference.

Good to know: If a permanent tooth is knocked out, keeping it moist (in milk or held gently in place) and getting to a dentist within the hour gives the best chance of saving it.

Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment (endodontics) saves a tooth that is infected or badly decayed at its core, relieving pain and avoiding the need for extraction. It is recommended when decay or injury has reached the nerve inside the tooth.

What's involved

  • Examination and X-rays to confirm the tooth needs treatment
  • Local anaesthetic so the area is numb throughout
  • Removing the infected or damaged inner tissue of the tooth
  • Cleaning and shaping the canals inside the tooth
  • Sealing the canals to prevent further infection
  • Fitting a crown afterwards, if needed, to protect and strengthen the tooth

What to expect

The procedure is done under local anaesthetic and shouldn't hurt, though some mild soreness afterwards is normal and settles within a few days. Most root canal treatments are completed over one or two visits.

Good to know: A tooth that has had root canal treatment can last a long time, especially when protected with a crown and looked after with regular check-ups.

Dentures & Partial Dentures

Dentures replace some or all missing teeth, restoring the ability to chew and speak comfortably and supporting your facial appearance. Options range from full dentures to partial dentures in acrylic, flexible or cobalt chrome materials, depending on your needs.

What's involved

  • Consultation to assess remaining teeth and discuss suitable options
  • Impressions or scans to design a custom fit
  • Selecting the right material (acrylic, flexible or cobalt chrome) for your case
  • A try-in appointment to check fit, bite and appearance before finalising
  • Fitting the finished denture with adjustments as needed
  • Guidance on cleaning, wearing and adapting to your new denture

What to expect

It is normal to need a short adjustment period as your mouth gets used to a new denture, and minor tweaks after fitting are common and expected. Your dentist will schedule follow-ups to make sure it feels comfortable and secure.

Good to know: Dentures should be removed and cleaned daily, and regular check-ups help ensure the fit stays comfortable as your mouth naturally changes over time.

Gum Care & Periodontics

Gum care and periodontics treat gum disease, from early inflammation to more advanced cases, protecting the foundations that hold your teeth in place. It is especially important for patients with bleeding, swollen or receding gums.

What's involved

  • Assessment of gum health, including pocket-depth measurements
  • Scaling to remove plaque and tartar above the gumline
  • Deep cleaning (root planing) below the gumline for more advanced cases
  • Advice on brushing and flossing techniques to manage gum health at home
  • Monitoring progress over follow-up visits
  • Referral for specialist care if a complex case needs it

What to expect

Deep cleaning may involve local anaesthetic and can leave gums feeling tender for a day or two, but discomfort is generally mild and manageable. Sticking to your home-care routine between visits makes a real difference to the results.

Good to know: Gum disease is very common but usually manageable when caught early — bleeding gums are a signal worth mentioning to your dentist rather than ignoring.

Extractions & Minor Surgery

Extractions and minor oral surgery are for teeth that can't be saved or need to be removed, including wisdom teeth, along with other small surgical procedures. This is recommended when a tooth is too damaged, infected or impacted to keep.

What's involved

  • Examination and X-rays to assess the tooth and surrounding area
  • Discussion of alternatives before deciding extraction is the right option
  • Local anaesthetic to numb the area before the procedure
  • Careful removal of the tooth, including impacted wisdom teeth where needed
  • Guidance on aftercare and managing the healing socket
  • A follow-up review to check that healing is progressing well

What to expect

You shouldn't feel pain during the procedure itself thanks to the anaesthetic, though some soreness and swelling afterwards is normal and settles over a few days with simple aftercare. Resting and following your dentist's instructions helps healing go smoothly.

Good to know: Avoiding rinsing, spitting forcefully, smoking or drinking through a straw for the first day or so helps protect the healing socket and reduces the risk of complications like dry socket.
